  • 1531: The duke of Gelderland gives permission to Winterswijk to hold an annual market.
1552 
  • 1552: A fire in the village of Winterswijk destroys many houses. At least one person, a disabled carpenter named Engelbert Bonninck, dies in the fire.
1559 
  • 1559: The new bishopric of Deventer is formed, which includes Bredevoort.
1560 
  • 1560: De gebroeders Slegel maken een orgel voor de Helenakerk in Aalten.
1562 
  • 1562: The lords of Anholt pawn the manor of Bredevoort.
1586 
  • 1586: Bredevoort is troubled by witches. Several witch trials are conducted. One witch dies during torture without confessing her crimes.

  • 1597: Bredevoort is captured for the Dutch Republic by Maurits of Orange.
1599 
  • 1599: Pastor Rauwerts holds a speech supporting the reformation. Ever since, the Dutch Reformed religion has been the dominant religion in the region.
1606 
  • 1606: The Spanish try to recapture Bredevoort. They capture the town, but not the castle. The Dutch Republican troops reclaim the town.

  • 1610: Willem ten Oistendarp from De Heurne, Dinxperlo and Berend Swenen from Barlo, Aalten fail the water test and are sentenced to death for witchcraft.
11 1611 
  • 1611: At the order of the bishop, many anabaptists flee Münster. Several families settle in Winterswijk.
12 1612 
  • 1612: The Nassaus pawn the manor of Bredevoort.
13 1626 
  • 1626: Around 1626, Hendrickje Stoffels is born in Bredevoort. She would later become the mistress and model of the famous painter Rembrandt van Rijn.
14 1627 
  • 1627: The nearby town of Groenlo is conquered by the Dutch Republican troops and remains Dutch thereafter.
15 1636 
  • 1636: The plague strikes the area. Several people die of this 'black death'.
16 1646 
  • 1646: Lightning strikes the gunpowder tower of the Bredevoort castle. The entire castle and several houses in the vicinity are destroyed. Several people, including the sheriff, are killed.
17 1648 
  • 1648: All the church bells ring in celebration of the peace of Münster, which ends the Dutch War of Independence.
18 1665 
  • 1665: Münster bishop Bernard van Galen invades the Achterhoek area with a large army.
19 1672 
  • 1672: Bredevoort is occupied by the Munster bishop Bernard van Galen from 1672 until 1674. During that time, the official religion is changed to Roman-Catholic.

  • 1674: A chapel of the cross (Kreuzkapelle) is establised just across the German border to allow Roman Catholics from Aalten to worship.

  • 1704: The Bredevoort fortifications are being enhanced according to the views of the famous fortification expert Menno van Coehoorn.

  • 1711: The Anabaptists build their own church in Winterswijk.
26 1715 
  • 1715: Lightning strikes the tower of the Winterswijk church. This causes a fire, which is quickly put out.
27 1723 
  • 1723: A fire destroys the neighboring town of Varsseveld.
28 1727 
  • 1727: Two 'contrescarps' (steep inclines) are added in front of the two gates of Bredevoort to further protect the town.
29 1730 
  • 1730: In Dinxperlo, sections of the common grounds are sold to clear debts with the Bredevoort administration.
30 1748 
  • 1748: The first complete registration of the population of the manor Bredevoort takes place.
31 1750 
  • 1750: A religious revival sweeps through Aalten.
32 1755 
  • 1755: The Bredevoort fortifications are decommissioned.
33 1759 
  • 1759: The Bredevoort garrison is decomissioned. New rules are introduced for the opening and closing of the town gates.

  • 1763: English troops pass through Bredevoort.

  • 1765: In Burlo, an agreement is reach about the border between Aalten, Dinxperlo and Winterswijk and the neighboring bishopric of Münster.
36 1775 
  • 1775: A new law is introduced for the serfs of the manor of Bredevoort. This law allows them more freedom.
37 1784 
  • 1784: An inspection shows the Bredevoort fortifications are in disarray. Plans to redevelop the fort are never executed.
38 1795 
  • 1795: With the French occupation, serfdom is abolished. All former serfs now own the farms they worked on.
39 1799 
  • 1799: Winterswijk gets its own Catholic church.
  • 1799: The noblewoman Judith van Dorth is executed for openly wearing the orange color and supporting the Dutch troops against the French.
40 1809 
  • 1809: King Lodewijk Napoleon Bonaparte visits Bredevoort.
41 1811 
  • 1811: With the introduction of the civil registration, all inhabitants are forced to chose a fixed family name. The practice of farm names is now officially abolished, although it is still in use informally today.
42 1812 
  • 1812: Many conscripted soldiers die during Napoleon's disastrous march to Moscow.
43 1813 
  • 1813: The Cossacks drive out the French occupiers.
44 1818 
  • 1818: The municipalities of Bredevoort and Aalten are combined into the new municipality of Aalten.
45 1822 
  • 1822: In the night of September 27, a fire in Winterswijk destroyed five houses, leaving 15 people homeless.
46 1824 
  • 1824: In Winterswijk, new taxes on slaughtering animals cause a riot.
47 1827 
  • 1827: Start of the division of the common grounds.
48 1834 
  • 1834: The Winterswijk church gets a new organ by the famous organ builder Naber.
49 1835 
  • 1835: Jan Willem Meijerink starts the first textile factory on the Lappenbrink in Winterswijk.
50 1844 
  • 1844: The first emigrants leave Winterswijk and Aalten for North-America.
51 1845 
  • 1845: Winterswijk Seceders get their own church at the Zonnebrink.
52 1847 
  • 1847: On Lake Michigan in the US, the ship 'Phoenix' perishes. On board were 250 emigrants, mostly from Winterswijk, Aalten and Varsseveld.
53 1856 
  • 1856: The emigrant vessel Ocean Home perishes in the English Channel off Lizard Point. 70 people drown, including several emigrants from Dinxperlo.
54 1880 
  • 1880: The railroad from Winterswijk to Bocholt in Germany is opened.
  • 1880: Piet Mondriaan, then 8 years old, moves to Winterswijk and grows up there. He would later become a famous painter.
55 1884 
  • 1884: The railroad from Winterswijk to Neede is opened.
56 1885 
  • 1885: The railroad from Winterswijk to Zevenaar, including stations at Bredevoort, Aalten and Varsseveld, was opened.
57 1890 
  • 1890: An ancient cannon has been found in Bredevoort. When this is fired during a celebration, it explodes killing two children.
  • 1890: An horse-drawn omnibus starts a regular service between Dinxperlo and Terborg. Each trip could take 10 people and 250 kg of cargo.
58 1891 
  • 1891: Dinxperlo gets its own department of the 'Geldersch-Overijsselse Maatschappij van Landbouw', a society to improve agriculture techniques.
59 1896 
  • 1896: A dairy processor is opened in Dinxperlo.
60 1902 
  • 1902: A cooperative bank is established in Dinxperlo.
61 1903 
  • 1903: About 2/3 of the workers are involved in a railroad strike in Winterswijk to improve working conditions and wages.
62 1908 
  • 1908: The hamlet of De Heurne near Dinxperlo gets their own church.
63 1911 
  • 1911: The smallest church in the Netherlands, de Rietstap, is built in Dinxperlo. The owner had inherited money on the provision he would build a church.
64 1914 
  • 1914: As a result of the 'great war', traffic ceases to flow between the Achterhoek and Germany.
  • 1914: For the first time, an aircraft is spotted in the sky above Dinxperlo.
65 1922 
  • 1922: Salt is found when drilling for natural resources in Winterswijk.
66 1927 
  • 1927: Rev. Stegeman from Aalten holds a speech in Amsterdam, which is transmitted by radio. In Aalten, tickets are sold to hear the show for 15 cents.
67 1932 
  • 1932: A chalk quarry is established in the Vosseveld area near Winterswijk.
