  • 1597: Bredevoort is captured for the Dutch Republic by Maurits of Orange.
1599 
  • 1599: Pastor Rauwerts holds a speech supporting the reformation. Ever since, the Dutch Reformed religion has been the dominant religion in the region.
1606 
  • 1606: The Spanish try to recapture Bredevoort. They capture the town, but not the castle. The Dutch Republican troops reclaim the town.
1610 
  • 1610: Willem ten Oistendarp from De Heurne, Dinxperlo and Berend Swenen from Barlo, Aalten fail the water test and are sentenced to death for witchcraft.
1611 
  • 1611: At the order of the bishop, many anabaptists flee Münster. Several families settle in Winterswijk.
1612 
  • 1612: The Nassaus pawn the manor of Bredevoort.
1626 
  • 1626: Around 1626, Hendrickje Stoffels is born in Bredevoort. She would later become the mistress and model of the famous painter Rembrandt van Rijn.
1627 
  • 1627: The nearby town of Groenlo is conquered by the Dutch Republican troops and remains Dutch thereafter.
1636 
  • 1636: The plague strikes the area. Several people die of this 'black death'.
10 1646 
  • 1646: Lightning strikes the gunpowder tower of the Bredevoort castle. The entire castle and several houses in the vicinity are destroyed. Several people, including the sheriff, are killed.
11 1648 
  • 1648: All the church bells ring in celebration of the peace of Münster, which ends the Dutch War of Independence.
12 1665 
  • 1665: Münster bishop Bernard van Galen invades the Achterhoek area with a large army.
13 1672 
  • 1672: Bredevoort is occupied by the Munster bishop Bernard van Galen from 1672 until 1674. During that time, the official religion is changed to Roman-Catholic.
14 1674 
  • 1674: A chapel of the cross (Kreuzkapelle) is establised just across the German border to allow Roman Catholics from Aalten to worship.
15 1682 
  • 1682: The Winterswijk weavers get permission to start their own weaver's guild.
16 1696 
  • 1696: The manor of Bredevoort is given to William III of Nassau (king of England and lieutenant of the Netherlands) as his personal property.
17 1698 
  • 1698: Dinxperlo gets its first school teacher: Heyne te Beest.
18 1704 
  • 1704: The Bredevoort fortifications are being enhanced according to the views of the famous fortification expert Menno van Coehoorn.
