John H. CORSCOT, secretary of the Madison City Gas, Light and Coke Company,
Madison, Dane County, WI, was born in Wenterswyk, Holland. His father,
Gerrit J. CORSCOT, was born in the same place. Gerrit J. CORSCOT learned the
trade of weaver and followed that until 1845, when accompanied by his wife
and two children, he came to America. He sailed from Rotterdam; landed at NY
after a voyage of seven weeks and three days. He then settled at Albany
[Albany County, NY] for six months, and then went to Jordan [Onondaga
County], NY, and remained there, engaging in farming until 1855, when he came
to Madison [Dane County], WI, where his death occurred in Jan 1892, at the
age of 90 years. The maiden name of the mother of our subject was Diana
DROPPERS, who was born in the same town as her husband [Wenterswyk, Holland]
and died in Madison [Dane County], WI. Gerrit J. and Diana (DROPPERS)
CORSCOT had two sons, William and John H.
John H. CORSCOT was only seven years old when he came to America and attended
the public schools of Jordan, NY, and then came to Madison, WI, and obtained
employment in the Madison mills for two years, and then learned the printer's
trade in the office of the Patriot, which he continued until 1865; then
entered the employ of the American Express Company as messenger on the
Chicago & Northwestern Railroad until 1868, when he became City Clerk of
Madison until 1890, which position he held continuously for 21 years. In
1871 John H. CORSCOT was married to Julia F. MAYERS, born in Westport [Dane
County], WI, daughter of Charles G. and Kate [p 416] (FITZGERALD) MEYERS, of
England. John H. and Julia F. (MAYERS) CORSCOT have two children, namely:
Kate M. and John C.
