    • Het gezin is in 1847 vanuit Holten geemigreerd om economische en religieuze redenen. Ze woonden in Holten Dijkerhoek nr. 160. Ze waren van plan om naar Michigan te gaan. Hij behoorde tot de Afgescheidenen, en was lid van de Christelijk gereformeerde kerk evenals zijn sitefbroer Teunis, geb. 1797, kleermaker, die samen met hem reisde.

    On November 21, 1847, the propeller Phoenix perished on Lake Michigan, a couple of miles off the shore from Sheboygan. About 250 people died and only 43 people survived. Most of the passengers were Dutch immigrants.
