    • De aantekening "Co D 122th NY Vol" bij zijn begraafgegevens geeft aan dat hij vrijwillig voor New York heeft gevochten in de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog voor de 112th New York infranterie. Hij werd door de Confederacy gevangen genomen op 29 september 1864 en kwam bijna van honger om toen hij gevangen zat in de Andersonville gevangenis. Hij werd net op tijd vrijgelaten.
